Frequently asked questions
Making changes in your life can be difficult, and at times you may feel powerful emotions. There may be times when things feel like they are getting worse before the get better. However, developing this self awareness and gaining strategies on how to cope and manage powerful emotions will lead you towards a better understanding of your self and movement towards positive change and sense of wellbeing.
With a few exceptions, what you say in therapy is confidential. At times however, you may direct me in writing to share information with whomever you feel necessary.
There are some situations when we are required by law and ethics to break this confidentiality and must share your information with the appropriate contacts:
- If there is reason to believe you are at serious and imminent risk of physically harming yourself or another person.
- If there is reason to believe that a child is suffering from abuse and/or neglect.
- If you inform us of a regulated health professional who is abusing a patient.
- A judge subpeaonoas your records.
- A regulatory college (e.g. College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario) performs an audit and requests client records.
- etc.
We'll go over all of this more thoroughly before your first session.
